New Event | Laudato Si’ w/ Fr Jean Nyembo SJ

Disclaimer: This is an event organised by the London Jesuit Centre
Jean Nyembo helped to establish the Arrupe Centre for Research and Training in Lubumbashi in the DRC.
His research concerns social justice in the context of mining governance. In particular he focuses on exposing the exploitative practices of the cobalt mining industry in the country. In this talk he will take us on a journey through the colonial past up to the present day drawing continuities between the rubber trade in the nineteenth century and the cobalt trade in 2025. What challenges face people of good will – called to action against ecological and social injustice by Pope Francis – when confronted by the realities of these industrial practices in the global south?
It promises to be a fascinating talk which will bring together the theoretical aspects of Laudato Si’ with accounts of the real world impact of the ecological crisis and with guidance for practical action and advocacy going forward.
