St Thomas of Canterbury, Woodford | Parish Good News

Despite near‑freezing temperatures and a chance of rain, the participants went ahead, determined to show solidarity with people who sleep rough or have experienced homelessness. With just some cardboard and sleeping bags, the group took on the challenge together.
Their efforts paid off, as they raised over £1,000 for Southend’s SVP Centre, which provides local services for people facing homelessness and housing insecurity. In addition, the group made a £50 donation to Your Place as a gesture of thanks to Des, who provided input for the evening.
Des, the pastoral assistant at St Francis of Assisi in Stratford, shared his experience and insights into the realities of homelessness and the work being done to support those in need. His presence provided context for the event, helping the young people better understand the purpose and realities of the Sleepout, as well as the importance of compassion in their community.
The Young Vinnies’ commitment, teamwork, and willingness to step outside their comfort zone made this Sleepout a meaningful learning experience that not only raised much‑needed funds but also strengthened their understanding of service, dignity, and social justice.
Caritas Brentwood wishes to extend our heartfelt thanks to the St Thomas Young Vinnies and to everyone who sponsored them.
