Bishop of Salford, John Arnold: President-Elect of Caritas Europa

Bishop John Arnold’s election as the next President of Caritas Europa is wonderful news for the wider Caritas family and a deeply encouraging moment for all those committed to Catholic social action across Europe.
A longstanding friend and supporter of CSAN, Bishop John has consistently demonstrated a profound commitment to Catholic Social Teaching, international solidarity, and the inherent dignity of every person. Throughout his ministry, he has brought together thoughtful pastoral leadership with a deep concern for justice, care for creation, and the pursuit of the common good.
His election comes at a particularly significant moment. Across Europe and beyond, communities continue to face immense challenges: ongoing conflict and displacement, rising poverty and inequality, changing patterns of migration, environmental pressures, and deep social and political uncertainty. These realities demand not only practical responses, but forms of leadership capable of holding together compassion, hope and a clear moral vision. Bishop John’s long-standing commitment to dialogue, accompaniment and social justice makes him especially well placed to help guide the Caritas network through such a moment.
As Bishop of Salford, Bishop John has repeatedly demonstrated the importance of connecting faith with action, and of ensuring that Catholic Social Teaching is not simply discussed, but embodied in the life of the Church and in service to society. His concern for environmental justice, human dignity and the voices of those too often pushed to the margins has been a consistent feature of his ministry, and these priorities resonate deeply with the mission of Caritas.
Caritas Europa represents a remarkable network of organisations working across 46 countries, offering both practical support and prophetic witness in response to many of the defining challenges of our age. At a time when Europe continues to wrestle with questions of identity, solidarity and responsibility, the Caritas mission remains as important as ever: reminding us that care for the poor, the vulnerable and the displaced is not secondary to the life of the Church, but central to it.
As Bishop John prepares to take up this role in May 2027, we congratulate him on his election and assure him of our prayers and support. We look forward with hope and encouragement to the next chapter of Caritas Europa’s work and witness under his leadership, and to its continued contribution in responding to the pressing challenges of our time in the light of the Gospel.
