As a special work of Caritas Brentwood, we are very pleased to share that this year’s St John Bosco Camp gave 170 young people a week away, supported by 120 volunteers who gave up their time to make it happen.

Every summer, the camp offers children aged 9 to 12 a week they won’t forget. It’s all about mixing outdoor adventure with faith, giving campers the chance to get outside, make new friends and grow in their faith through Mass and other spiritual activities along the way.

There was plenty going on too, from archery, swimming, football, volleyball, chess and puzzles, to team building, prayer and a relaxed space for arts and crafts. Fr Dominic Howarth, Caritas Brentwood’s Episcopal Vicar, says he is hopeful it will keep growing to support even more young people from across the Diocese in the years ahead.

Donelle, one of this year’s campers, stated: “It’s really fun and they have so many exciting adventures and there are lots of things to do and I’m making brand new friends while having the best time ever.” Casper, another camper, adds, “All the activities are really fun, and you will never get bored. I really encourage all of you to come because you really shouldn’t miss out on something like this.”

For volunteers like George, Tara and Kayla, the camp is just as rewarding. They told us the camp offers hands-on experience in organising and running activities, and the chance to be a role model, guiding children while helping them feel safe and comfortable. The experience also builds leadership skills, public speaking and confidence, showcasing a sense of family and community and demonstrating healthy relationships that bring smiles to everyone involved. Above all, it’s about being with friends and having a good time.
