An afternoon of reflection, conversation and shared learning inspired those working to support communities across Essex and East London.

“What makes this day so special is the opportunity for people to connect. Parish volunteers, charities and community groups each bring their own experience and insight. When we create space for these conversations, new ideas and partnerships begin to grow, creating real change for those most in need. That’s exactly what the Caritas Brentwood network is about.”

Director of Caritas Brentwood

On Saturday, 7th March, Caritas Brentwood hosted its fourth annual Networking Day at Our Lady of Lourdes Parish in Wanstead. The afternoon brought together parishioners, volunteers and charity partners from across Essex and East London to share ideas, learn from one another and celebrate the many ways people are responding to need in their local communities.

We were delighted to have Fr Dominic Howarth and Bishop Alan Williams to open the day. Both offered warm encouragement for the work already taking place across the Diocese and reflected on Pope Leo’s 2026 Lenten message. Echoing the Pope’s call to open our hearts and truly listen to the needs of others, Bishop Alan invited us to remain guided by those we seek to support, listening with sincerity, humility and compassion.

Our keynote speaker, Jenny Sinclair from Together for the Common Good, gave a thoughtful and engaging presentation titled Caritas, People and Place. She explored how Catholics today can “read the signs of the times” and respond by applying Catholic Social Teaching in our everyday lives and communities. Jenny reflected on the importance of building genuine relationships and developing responses that grow from the needs and gifts of local people. Quoting Pope Francis, she reminded us that “the Church must be evangelised by the poor,” emphasising that the work of charity is not simply about providing services but about encounter, dignity and relationship. She concluded by returning to the meaning at the heart of Caritas, love, describing it as deeply personal, calling us to walk alongside others and work together for social justice.

The second half of the afternoon focused on Caritas Brentwood’s areas of focus: refugees and people seeking asylum, homelessness and the cost of living and care for the environment. Participants shared experiences from parish life, reflected on initiatives they were most proud of over the past year, and discussed the emerging needs they are seeing within their communities. These conversations sparked new ideas, encouragement and a strong sense of shared purpose, highlighting how valuable it is to come together to learn from one another.

The networking day was a valuable opportunity to connect, collaborate, and reaffirm that our mission is not one we carry alone. It is a shared journey, walking together to serve those most in need. We encourage everyone to continue the conversations begun on the day: reach out within your community, invite others to get involved, build links with nearby parishes and local charities, and look for new opportunities for joint social action.

Please remember that support is always available. If you would like guidance, help connecting with others, assistance developing ideas, or for us to speak or facilitate a session, we would be delighted to hear from you.
