Caritas Round-Up | January 2026

Elm Park Confirmation Session
On our first week back, we visited St Alban’s Parish in Elm Park, where we ran a session with their Confirmation candidates. We spoke about what we do at Caritas Brentwood, got the young people talking about current social issues they see, and, through engaging activities, explored questions around our principal areas of focus: refugees, homelessness, and the environment.
We finished the session with a reflection, inviting the young people to reflect on which area of focus resonated most with them and how the gifts of the Holy Spirit can help guide them in acting on these social issues.

Responding to Homelessness Event
On Saturday 24th January, we had the privilege to hold our Responding to Homelessness event, as part of our ongoing series in which we aim to engage, inspire and empower people across the diocese to live out Catholic Social Teaching.
Hosted by St Francis of Assisi Parish in Stratford, we were joined by speakers from Basildon Emergency Night Shelter, Rainham Food Bank and Your Place (formerly Caritas Anchor House). The speakers provided insight into what their organisations were doing to support people experiencing homelessness, as well as how we, as the people of the Diocese of Brentwood, could respond.
Michael, our development officer, said:
“It was great to see what is going on around the diocese and explore ways in which we can respond to homelessness, which is all too prevalent in our communities. One of the key messages I have taken away is that no deed is too small when it comes to helping people experiencing homelessness; we all have a role to play in helping others. Whether you’re the person making the food for the local soup kitchen, or you’re the parishioner who donates tinned vegetables, your contribution is so valuable.”
Specifically held at Stratford Parish because of the amazing work they have been doing with those experiencing homelessness or destitution, the event was a resounding success and a celebration of the work already being done.
The in-person meetings we have hosted are free and open to anyone who wants to attend. We look forward to organising more in the future.

Newham Journalists Interview
On January 27th, Siân, the Director of Caritas Brentwood, was interviewed by the NDPYC Journalists about her leadership experiences in Caritas, our work with young people, and how it relates to them and their experiences.
The journalists are part of the Newham Deanery & Partnership Youth Council (NDPYC) Young Journalist Programme. The programme offers young people a unique opportunity to explore the world of journalism, sharpen their writing skills, and report on topics that matter. Through mentorship and hands-on experience, participants learn how to craft compelling stories and share them with the world.
Keep an eye on their website for the article when it is released.

Million Minutes 15th Anniversary Celebration
On Friday, 30th January, Michael attended the Million Minutes 15th Anniversary Celebration. Held in London, the celebration brought together those who had been part of Million Minutes’ journey from its inception back in 2011 to today. Siân was involved at the very beginning of Million Minutes, as a volunteer helping to raise awareness of their work and fundraise for the charity.
The evening was engaging and informative as we learned more about Million Minutes’ ongoing and upcoming projects, all centred on listening to the needs of young people within Catholic communities (whether in schools or parishes).
Million Minutes’ innovative work around placing youth voice at the heart of change continues to offer a fresh understanding of the varied experiences of young people. We look forward to seeing more of their work as they continue to release new projects.

We have produced an updated set of resources for the season of Lent for use in parishes, schools and communities.
We are inviting everyone to participate in a number of the activities produced to help those most in need and celebrate the beauty of the local areas around us.
