Pilgrimage to Walsingham | Parish Good News

Diocesan pilgrimages, including the annual pilgrimage to Lourdes, hold deep significance in the life of the Church. They are not only expressions of faith and devotion but also powerful witnesses to the unity and diversity of the diocesan community. By drawing together people from across parishes and backgrounds, these pilgrimages help widen our perspective, reminding us that we belong to something greater than our immediate surroundings: one Universal Church.
For this year’s pilgrimage, we were delighted that the theme was Mary, Mother of the Poor, offered a profound reminder of God’s closeness to His people. When the Church gathers in pilgrimage, liturgy, and to serve the poor, it more fully lives out its vocation to make God present in the world. In this way, pilgrimage becomes not simply a journey to a place, but a renewal of our shared mission.
At Walsingham, the day was enriched by the celebration of Mass and Sung Evening Prayer, alongside opportunities for conversation and encounter. These moments fostered meaningful connections across geographical boundaries, strengthening the sense of communion that lies at the heart of the Church’s life.
As Erin from the Youth Service Team shared in our previous article:
Going on pilgrimage with the Brentwood Diocese, representing the Walsingham House Team and the Brentwood Catholic Youth Service, was a truly joyful and meaningful experience. The warm weather added to the wonderful atmosphere of reverence, community and faith, and it was inspiring to see so many parishes from across the diocese represented by groups of people coming together in prayer and celebration.
Experiences such as this are far more than simply a pleasant day out. They are significant moments of encounter that build unity, deepen our sense of belonging, and renew our understanding of who we are in Christ. For Caritas Brentwood, they also serve as an important reminder that our work to support others is rooted our Faith.
