Recently, students from St John Payne Catholic School in Chelmsford contributed to a national resource for Refugee Week 2026.

Offering their reflections on both courage and community, a video including the recordings of the students are now available to view as part of a collective worship assembly resource created by Caritas Brentwood and Caritas Social Action Network.

When reflecting on community and what makes a community thrive, the students said:

  • “Community for me is surrounding myself with my friends who always make everything better.”
  • One student referred to the famous wisdom of St. Teresa of Calcutta (Mother Teresa), who said: “What can you do to promote world peace? Go home and love your family.”
  • “When I think about my community I think about the love we have for each other.”
  • “Diversity strengthens us and standing up for what we believe in helps bring a sense of safety.”
  • “I believe everyone should be heard and have a say and we should all promote the common good, promoting human dignity.”
  • “Community brings me such joy, safety and happiness.”
  • “Taking time to answer questions with thought and maturity. Being people who are kind.”
  • “I love having people around me.”
  • “I know that whatever I bring to the table in terms of interests or passions will be valued rather than looked over. It’s inclusive.”

Taking place this week (15th – 21st June 2026), Refugee Week is an opportunity to celebrate the role that refugees play in our society, taking place every year around World Refugee Day (20th June) and is celebrated by more than 2 million people in more than 20 countries.

Refugee Week brings together people from different backgrounds to connect beyond labels and foster a deeper understanding of why people are displaced and the challenges they face when seeking safety.
