Over the last two years, St George’s Parish has been running their Warm Welcome Hub – what can your parish do this winter to help create a space of welcome for those on the margins?

In September 2023, following a Parish Social Action evening with Caritas, members of the parish council at St George & the English Martyrs’ Parish, Shoeburyness, began exploring ways to strengthen community ties, especially for those on the margins of parish life.

Amid growing concerns about the national cost-of-living crisis, in consultation with parishioners, the idea of creating a space that was free, safe, warm, and welcoming quickly took shape. Then, Autumn 2023, St George’s Warm Welcome Hub opened its doors for the first time.

The Hub is more than just a warm space, it’s a place to connect, share, and belong. Guests enjoy friendly conversation, games for all ages, and the chance to build relationships across generations. Each week, visitors are treated to hot soup and rolls, and (during Lent) fish fingers – all of which is provided free of charge.

“It has been really helpful for me to practise my English – and I meet really lovely people.”

The Hub has become a lifeline for many, including local residents with no previous connection to the parish and two refugee families who now feel at home despite initial language barriers. What began as a simple idea has grown into a vibrant community where everyone is welcome.

“So glad I was invited to come, I have met some lovely people who have made me so welcome. Really enjoyable couple of hours, I look forward to Friday afternoons.”

Having receiving donations from parishioners and local business over the last two years, in recognition of its impact, the Warm Welcome Hub was nominated for an Asda Foundation Community Grant in September. After a successful application process, we are delighted to share that the Hub has been awarded £600 which will help the the Hub stay open and free for everyone.
