See below for a message from Mary’s Meals about how their regular donations are being tripled by a generous donor.

As children across the UK return to school over the next few weeks, they will be excited and perhaps nervous to start a new school year. But what if their biggest back to school worry was being too hungry to learn, or falling ill in class due to hunger?

This is the back to school reality for millions of children living in the world’s poorest communities – but a daily school meal can change that. A donation of £19.15 allows us to provide a hungry child with a whole years’ worth of school meals, and right now that £19.15 will go THREE times as far. This is thanks to a generous donor who is tripling new regular gifts for the first three payments, up to a value of £250,000.

Meareg – Food changes the story

Seven-year-old Meareg lives with his parents in Tigray, Ethiopia, where he wakes up excited and eager to attend school each day. But this wasn’t always the case.

Before the introduction of Mary’s Meals at his school, Meareg was not only extremely hungry, he was also terribly unwell. A lack of food at home meant that he was severely underweight and suffering from a chronic lack of appetite. Meareg spent much of his day at school sleeping and crying.

Since the introduction of Mary’s Meals, life has changed for Meareg. His health has improved and he is now motivated to go to school where he knows he will eat a nutritious meal that will give him the energy to learn and play. His teacher tells us:

“I can say with absolute certainty that the regular school feeding programme has been crucial for this change, not just for Meareg, but for many children in our school.”

Food changed Meareg’s story from one of pain and hunger, to one of hope and resilience. That’s the power of Mary’s Meals.

Meareg’s story is just one of many that demonstrate how our community of 15,000 regular givers are making a difference every single day. They’re called Promise Pledgers, because they help us keep our promise to children like Meareg and reach even more children with life-changing school meals.
